John and Jordan’s love story began on a misty morning walk in Alabama, but it truly bloomed on the wild peaks of the Scottish Highlands. I met them in Glencoe, Scotland, where clouds drifted through rugged ridges and adventure filled the air. The highland breeze was chilly, the sky dramatic, and yet John and Jordan laughed through tears when reciting their vows to each other.

As Scottish elopement photographer I feel like there aren’t many places like Glencoe – which offers dramatic landscapes, breathtaking views, and an unforgettable adventure – and that spirit was alive as we witnessed their intimate mountain ceremony.

Mist and Mountaintops

High above the loch, the trail wound past thistle and river, heading up to the famous Three Sisters view. As we hiked, John and Jordan pointed out ferns and joked about Highland myths. High on one rocky bench, overlooking the peaks, they exchanged vows in a warm, misty hush – and the emotional elopement ceremony was led by Alyson Stewart.

It felt magical and totally them – quiet promises spoken as a chill mist curled around their shoulders. The Scottish Highlands are famous for four seasons in one day, so we embraced every breeze and drizzle as part of the adventure.

Handfasting Ceremony in the rain

After vows, we gathered for a joyful handfasting ceremony by a small forested loch. John and Jordan stood under a rainbow umbrella (perfect for a bit of whimsical color when weather rolled in). In Scotland, you can have a fully legal outdoor ceremony almost anywhere, which means weddings like this handfasting are not only romantic but official (and feel like you’re in an Outlander episode).

Alyson wove a braided cord around their hands – an ancient Celtic ritual symbolizing their unity – as the highland wind teased Jordan’s veil playfully. It felt like the weather was celebrating with them.

Mountain Elopement Gear and Packing List

Preparation makes all the difference when you tie the knot on top of a mountain. We packed layers, trail snacks, and extra warmth for these two lovebirds – because Scottish weather loves surprises. Footwear was key: sturdy hiking boots with good ankle support are a must. Waterproof outer layers are non-negotiable too; as one guides warn – Scottish weather is unpredictable, so these will be your best friends. We also tucked in a tartan shawl and extra sweaters, adding a dash of color (and warmth) on that gray day.

• Layers & rain gear: Pack a mix of base layers, a warm fleece, and a waterproof shell – weather here can flip from sunshine to drizzle before lunch.
• Tartan or shawl: A Scottish plaid wrap adds color (and warmth) in photos – plus, it’s a fun nod to local tradition.
• Umbrellas and ponchos: Clear wedding umbrellas (I always carry two!) and foldable ponchos keep you dry – until you brave enough to shed layers to get some epic – white-wedding-dress only photos!
• Snacks & water: Keep energy up for hiking to remote spots (and have something cosy to share after the ceremony!).

Essential Hiking Elopement Tips

Before you set out, always plan your mountain route in detail: download tracks of your chosen trail and test them on your phone or GPS device, and check sunrise and sunset times so you’re never racing the fading light. If the hike finished close to sunset, then head torches will be essential!

Consider hiring a local guide if you’re tackling more remote passes.

Also, aim to schedule your ceremony during a meteorologically “stable” window (often mid-morning in summer), and build extra time into your timeline to allow for sudden fog or rain.

Finally, you might want to consider packing a wee first-aid kit, hand-warmers, and a portable phone charger—because even in the Highlands, a little extra prep goes a long way toward making your mountain “I do” both safe and stress-free.
