Junnie and Aamir's walima wedding in Glasgow

Together with my second shooter Robert from Lighthouse Picture in Glasgow we had the pleasure of photographing Aamir and Junnie’s walima celebration.

A traditional Pakistani wedding consists of nikah – ceremony, and walima – reception.

What is walima? It’s a traditional part of an Islamic wedding, also known as a marriage banquet. The walima takes place after the marriage ceremony has already taken place. Its purpose it to show happiness after the marriage and to celebrate with the loved ones. According to the tradition, walima can last even up to two days!

So walima is a dinner organised by the groom’s side once their marriage is official. During the day Aamir was wearing an elegant tuxedo. Junnie was wearing a dazzling dress with gorgeous, traditional jewellery. The ladies at a traditional Pakistani wedding usually wear a colourful saree (a fabric worn from shoulders to ankles) or a lengha (a long skirt, a top with a scarf). The classic wedding attire for men during such celebration is sherwani, a long ethnic jacket with trousers.

Aamir and Junnie’s walima was a beautiful, colorful and very joyful celebration. It included lots of guests, ceilidh and a combination of Pakistani and Scottish traditions. Their ‘first’ wedding took place in New Jersey, United States and after that wedding events and celebrations continued in different parts of the world!

It was my first time photographing a traditional Asian wedding in Scotland and I loved it so much.  I really hope it’s not the last one I have photographed!
