On a winter Scottish afternoon – with soft clouds lending an atmospheric backdrop, I met this lovely couple for a portrait session in one of Edinburgh’s most picturesque neighbourhoods.
Historic architecture, cobbled lanes, and gentle autumn light made the perfect setting for storytelling imagery.
We began our walk through the atmospheric streets, where every corner offers a distinctive frame, from cosy closes and sandstone walls to pops of colour hidden between buildings. Instead of fighting the unpredictable weather, we embraced it: overcast skies and shifting light often make for the most evocative photographs.
As we wandered, laughter and genuine emotion became the real focal point of the session. Rather than overly posed moments, the goal was to capture natural connection – the spontaneous glances, the quiet smiles, and the simple joy of being together in a city they love.

This kind of photo session is about more than pretty backdrops – it’s about freezing moments (and temperatures – but only sometimes!) that feel true, cinematic, and deeply personal.
Whether you’re exploring a city you know by heart, or soaking up every new detail together for the first time, the energy of the surroundings becomes part of your story.
If you’re thinking about having couple portraits taken here in Edinburgh or further afield, I’d love to hear the story you want to tell – and help you create soulful, memorable images that reflect it.
