Edinburgh Engagement Sessions: locations, tips & ideas

So you’ve just got engaged (or you’re about to!) – that’s so exciting!

Now, if you’re thinking about an Edinburgh engagement session, you’re onto something absolutely brilliant. This city is dripping with romance, from its medieval closes to its grand castles – the perfect backdrop for those unforgettable memories to post all over Instagram and hang in cute frames all over your house.

Imagine cosying up under a shared umbrella on a rainy day in Old Town, or having a cheeky giggle as you twirl down Victoria Street (yes, the one that looks like Diagon Alley). Fancy something more dramatic? How about an epic kiss on the steps of a grand gothic cathedral, or a windswept moment on Calton Hill in the rain with Edinburgh’s skyline stretching behind you?

Of course, an Edinburgh engagement photoshoot isn’t just about locations—it’s about capturing you two being unapologetically yourselves. I’ll be there to help you every step of the way, whether it’s choosing an outfit that makes you feel like a million quid or figuring out how to dip without toppling over on cobblestones (trust me, it happens!).

After all, your engagement photos should be a treasure you’ll look back on fondly, whether you’re popping by Scotland for a short trip or you’ve lived here your whole life.

Engagement photos in Edinburgh | Edinburgh engagement photographer

Thinking about having an engagement photoshoot in Edinburgh? You’ve made a fantastic choice! Whether you’re drawn to Scotland’s rich history or its breathtaking landscapes, engagement photoshoot aims to capture the magic of your love story in one of the most photogenic cities in the world.

From gothic cathedrals and medieval castles to lush green parks and dramatic hilltops, Edinburgh offers a dream setting for every couple.

Couple stands outdoors in a historic old town setting, with the man embracing the woman from behind. They both look off into the distance, smiling softly. Stone buildings and a large castle-like structure rise in the background under an overcast sky

This city stole my heart the first time I visited, and I promise it’ll do the same for you. Between the sound of bagpipes on the Royal Mile, artisan coffee in charming cafés, and a dram of whisky by the fire in a cosy pub, an engagement session is more than just a photoshoot – it’s an experience.

So, let’s unlock the best locations, hidden gems, and top tips to ensure you get the most stunning photos in Edinburgh.

Why book an Edinburgh engagement session?

Firstly, memories – it will become a great memory to look back on. So once you’ve got the link to your final gallery, order prints and put them in an album. Also, you can show them to your friends and family also by sharing them on Facebook, Instagram or Pinterest. Or send your friends and family a link to the gallery!

Secondly, your engagement photos can be used as a Save-The-Dates, together with your wedding invitations. Isn’t it an awesome way to announce your wedding date to your family and friends?

Thirdly, Edinburgh is a perfect place for engagement photos. It boasts a variety of beautiful locations – both within the city and outside. It’s an engagement photographer’s dream, as the town has so much to offer!

Finally, another great reason is that an engagement photoshoot is an opportunity to build a connection with your wedding photographer and get to know them. It gives you an idea about what to expect on your wedding day. And it’s also a chance to discuss your elopement or wedding day with them and share your ideas.

Embracing Scotland’s weather — yes, even the rain

Believe it or not, a little rain can work in your favour.

Clouds lend a dreamy, dramatic quality to your images and the soft light can be super flattering. Bring a light jacket or an extra layer so you’re ready for a quick shift in weather – even in summer! If the skies do open up, don’t panic; that’s a golden opportunity for cosy, romantic shots huddled under an umbrella. Embrace it, and let the Scottish mist add that dash of magic to your photos.

And I need to come clean here – I’m not a big fan of sunny days when photographing people in love, Scotland looks best on a dreary day (but an epic sunset doesn’t hurt either, just look at Virginia and Jacob’s engagement shoot on top of Arthur’s Seat below!)

Best time of year for an Edinburgh engagement session

The answer is – it’s entirely up to you!

Just make sure that as soon as you’ve found the photographer whose work you absolutely love, get in touch with them and lock in the date. The wedding and elopement season in Scotland never stops so we can be quite busy – and fully booked! And with spring, summer and autumn dates always being in high demand, you might want to secure your slot as soon as you can.

Now, let’s talk seasons of the year.

As every single month shows different colours of the landscapes, you might want to consider what kind of atmosphere you’d like to go for.

Beautiful oranges and yellows of autumn? Leaves falling from the trees? Or maybe you’re dreaming of engagement photoshoot at the summer sunset in the evening, with a view of Edinburgh skyline? Or would you prefer to travel to the Scottish highlands to have snowy mountain tops in the background of your images?

What to wear for your Edinburgh engagement photos

Now let’s talk outfits. Because let’s face it – no one wants to spend their shoot fidgeting in too-tight dress or hiding goosebumps, even in a super-cute jacket.

Comfort over everything

Wear something that lets you feel like yourself. If a fancy outfit is too restrictive or you’re freezing in a thin coat, it’ll show in the photos! Stay true to your personal style and keep the weather in mind – Scottish seasons can be pretty nippy.

And if you want to show off your outfit on a chilly day, still bring a warm, waterproof layer on top – we can always chuck it to the side for the most photos!

Avoid bold patterns & logos

Your engagement images should feel timeless, so avoid distracting prints or brand logos. Scottish landscapes are moody and romantic, and we want you to be the focus.

Options that always work

  • Maxi dresses: They add a soft, romantic vibe (not just for Outlander fans!)
  • Chinos and a shirt for him: Simple but sophisticated
  • Long wool coats: Super elegant in cooler weather
  • Clear umbrellas: Not just practical for the rain, but also a super-cute prop in your photos

Best colours for engagement photos in Scotland

Neutrals and earthy tones – mustard, browns, oranges, greys, beiges – look amazing against Scotland’s dramatic backdrops. A pop of colour is fantastic, too, so long as it doesn’t blend in (e.g., avoid green if we’ll be near lush greenery).

To make it even easier, here’s what I’d go for – and what I’d leave in the wardrobe:

  • Great for a bright accent: Mustard, orange, yellow
  • What I generally skip: Intense blues, pinks, or purples
  • Variety between both of you: Avoid dressing identically – for instance in all-black outfits
  • Sweaters, tweed, and cosy knits are fantastic for autumn or winter sessions in the Scottish chill

If you’re still stumped, I’m always happy to help you plan your outfits, based on the location and vibe you’re after.

Edinburgh engagement sessions & Highland adventures

If you’re after something short and sweet, my 90-minute Edinburgh engagement sessions are perfect for capturing the city’s romantic corners.

But if you’d like more time in front of the camera – or you want to embrace Scotland’s wild side – I also offer Adventure Sessions both in the city and throughout the Highlands. It’s an ideal option for anyone who feels 90 minutes simply isn’t enough, loves the rugged landscapes where legends were born (or has a soft spot for Outlander, just like I do!), and wants images that truly capture that epic Scottish spirit.

Adventure sessions are available both in Edinburgh and all over the highlands, and are often chosen by couples seeking a longer pre-wedding session, or an anniversary one (you’ll find some examples here and here).

Timing your Edinburgh engagement session perfectly

When it comes to Edinburgh, early mornings are hands down the best option for your engagement session. If you opt to start in the afternoon or evening, you’ll find yourself surrounded by tourists and likely queuing for a snap at the city’s most popular spots – which isn’t exactly ideal for a relaxed experience.

Avoiding tourist rush and ensuring a crowd-free photography experience is always worth getting up very early, I promise! (and that’s advice from a night owl who hates getting out of bed early, trust me). All of my engagement sessions in Edinburgh start early in the morning, as close to sunrise as possible.

After an early city photoshoot you can head to my favourite brunch spot just off Circus Lane – the Pantry – or simply grab a nice strong cup of coffee and a pastry at the Milkman Cafe.

However, if we’re heading to the highlands, there’s a lot more flexibility with timing. In places like Glencoe or the Isle of Skye, I often love shooting around sunset for that soft, glowing light – or embracing the dramatic clouds that lend Scotland its signature mood.

All in all, it’s wise to trust your local photographer’s advice when picking the perfect time of day. Keeping an eye on the weather forecast (I’ll bring my clear umbrellas for you if needed!) will help us capture those magical, atmospheric shots you’ll treasure for years to come.

So as a local who knows these streets backwards and forwards, I’ll always make sure the timing works perfectly for you – whatever the season or weather.

Adding a personal Scottish touch to your photos

Scotland is brimming with character, so why not sprinkle some Scottishness into your photos?

You could sip on a dram of whisky (or a pint of lager) in a charming pub, tuck into a plate of fresh scones at a cosy café, or wander the stalls of a local market hand-in-hand. Or simply wrap your shoulders into a tartan shawl.

Incorporating these small yet meaningful details not only celebrates Scottish culture but also showcases your unique personalities in a way no other session can. After all, the best photos are the ones that capture both your connection to each other and the spirit of the place you’re in.

Best Edinburgh locations for an engagement session

Let me be your guide through some of my favourite Edinburgh hideaways – from the cobbled magic of the Old Town and the elegant Georgian streets of New Town, to hilltop views, secret courtyards, lush gardens and a mews so charming you’ll want to move in.

Edinburgh is endlessly photogenic and every corner tells a different story.

Here are the spots I keep coming back to with my couples.

The Royal Mile

Brimming with history (and the odd bagpiper) includes a wide selection of narrow closes and gothic architecture, often a perfect spot to start! the beating heart of Edinburgh’s Old Town, lined with narrow closes, gothic architecture and the occasional bagpiper. We can duck into Advocates Close or Dunbar’s Close Garden for intimate, moody shots away from the crowds.

The Vennel Steps (the Vennel Viewpoint)

For that picture-postcard view of Edinburgh Castle framed by old stone walls. Let’s get there early though – by mid-morning it’s already very busy and the magic is definitely in having the Vennel Viewpoint all to yourselves.

A man gets down on one knee to propose on the rain-soaked Vennel Steps in Edinburgh, with Edinburgh Castle rising dramatically on its volcanic rock above the Old Town rooftops behind them

St Giles’ Cathedral

It’s a Gothic gem that feels straight out of Outlander. The grand doorway makes for incredibly dramatic photos and the cobbled square in front gives us room to work with. And we’ll definitely take a few photos at the adjacent Parliament Square.

A couple walk arm in arm down the steps of St Giles' Cathedral in Edinburgh Old Town, the woman in a flowing white dress, framed by the cathedral's intricate gothic stone carvings and a Victorian lantern

New College (Divinity College)

Divinity College is a real-life Hogwarts. The courtyard is one of Edinburgh’s best-kept secrets for couples – impossibly atmospheric, especially on a misty morning. Divinity College is a building administered by and belonging to University of Edinburgh and it’s often off-limits on weekends (as there are no lectures or academic activities there then).

A couple hold hands and smile as they walk down the grand stone staircase of New College (Divinity College) in Edinburgh, the gothic arched doorway and Victorian gas lamps framing the scene behind them

Victoria Street & Victoria Terrace

The famous for its rainbow of shopfronts and Harry-Potteresque atmosphere. Great for something colourful and playful and it photographs beautifully both on a sunny and cloudy day.

Victoria Terrace is an elegant covered walkway that runs above the street, offering a completely different perspective. The arched stone balcony and sweeping views down over the colourful rooftops make for some of my favourite couple portraits in the whole city.

A man kisses his partner on the forehead as she smiles softly on Victoria Terrace in Edinburgh, the moody Old Town rooftops and a hint of Victoria Street below visible behind them

Writer’s Museum & Lady Stair’s Close, Makar’s Court

A hidden courtyard just off the Royal Mile that most tourists walk straight past. Quiet, characterful, and full of interesting textures – one of my personal favourites for intimate moments. You might recognise it from Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein (Netflix, 2025), which used Lady Stair’s Close as a filming location – which tells you everything you need to know about just how cinematic this little corner of Edinburgh really is.

A couple share an intimate moment in silhouette in Parliament Square, Edinburgh, with the bronze equestrian statue of Charles II and the gothic facade of St Giles' Cathedral looming dramatically behind them

Its stunning red sandstone facade on Queen Street is a gorgeous backdrop, and the grand interior is worth exploring for something a little different – full of art, grandeur and moodiness.

National Galleries of Scotland

The neoclassical columns on the Mound make for a grand, timeless backdrop – especially beautiful in autumn when the surrounding trees turn gold. And if you fancy something indoors, the gallery interiors are just as special: the original jewel-toned décor of the rooms, with their high ceilings and warm walls hung with old paintings, makes for something genuinely romantic and elegant. Not your typical engagement shoot backdrop – which is exactly why I love it.

Princes Street Gardens

The gardens are surprisingly peaceful oasis right in the city centre, with the castle rising dramatically behind you. The Ross Fountain and the Scott Monument are both here too, giving you several looks within one location.

Scott Monument

Towering Gothic spire in the middle of the gardens. Great for a sense of scale and drama – standing at its base makes everything feel cinematic and grand.

Ross Fountain

A beautiful Victorian cast-iron fountain in the western gardens, with the castle as a backdrop. A favourite for proposals, too!

Arthur’s Seat & St Anthony’s Chapel in Holyrood Park

Perfect at sunset for those dreamy, cinematic One Day photos.

It’s a 30-40 minute hike to the top, but the panoramic views over Edinburgh are completely worth it. St Anthony’s Chapel ruins along the way are magical in their own right.

The Royal Botanic Gardens

A lush green oasis whenever you need to unwind – feels worlds away from the city, even though it’s just minutes from the centre. Beautiful in every season, but especially dreamy in spring when the cherry blossoms are out, and in autumn sprinkled with colourful foliage all around. The famous glasshouse is now (2026) unfortunately still under construction.

Calton Hill

Calton Hill guarantees sweeping 360° views of the city, the Firth of Forth and beyond. Go early to beat the crowds – at sunrise it’s one of the most beautiful spots in all of Edinburgh. Sunsets are even more beautiful but also extremely busy.

A couple sits on a stone ledge on Calton Hill, overlooking the city of Edinburgh. The woman, dressed in a long beige coat and a patterned scarf, smiles warmly while leaning into her partner, who sits beside her with his arm wrapped around her
The man, wearing a beige coat and a black scarf, gazes into the distance while the woman, also in a beige coat, smiles and leans into his embrace. The historic Dugald Stewart Monument in the background

Dean Village

Tucked away in a valley below the New Town, this little village feels like a fairy tale. The old mill buildings, the Water of Leith and Bells Brae make for impossibly romantic photos.

Circus Lane

A mews so charming you might try to move in on the spot (it’s pricey – otherwise I would have done it already). Cobblestones, ivy-covered walls and window boxes overflowing with flowers. Magical in every season – and very close to my favourite breakfast spot the Pantry in Stockbridge (a perfect way to wrap up an early morning engagement session in Edinburgh New Town).

A couple walk hand in hand along the cobblestones of Circus Lane in Edinburgh's New Town, surrounded by ivy-covered mews houses, climbing roses and the clock tower of St Stephen's Church rising behind them
A couple share an intimate moment on Circus Lane in Edinburgh, foreheads almost touching and smiling, with the cobblestone mews and St Stephen's Church tower softly blurred behind them

Because no early morning shoot is complete without breakfast afterwards – The Milkman on Cockburn Street does the best coffee in the Old Town (and offers a great selection of pastries, the almond crossaints are vegan and to die for) and a visit to the Pantry in Stockbridge a perfect way to wrap up an early morning engagement session in New Town.

Consider it the reward for getting out of bed at dawn!

Frequently Asked Questions about Edinburgh engagement sessions

How long is an Edinburgh engagement session?

My standard sessions come in two lengths – 90 minutes and 2 hours.

The 90-minute option is perfect for visiting two or three locations and capturing a good variety of shots, while the 2-hour session gives us a little more breathing room to explore further or add an extra location into the mix.

Not sure which would suit your wishlist? Just drop me an email and I’ll happily advise which option works best for the locations you have in mind.

And if you’d like even more time – whether in Edinburgh or venturing further afield into the Highlands – I also offer longer Adventure Sessions for those after something even more epic.

What’s the best time of day for engagement photos in Edinburgh?

Early morning, without a doubt. The light is softer, the streets are quieter, and you’ll have iconic spots like the Vennel Steps or Circus Lane almost entirely to yourselves.

I know – getting out of bed at dawn isn’t exactly the most romantic, but I promise the photos make it worth it. And brunch afterwards always helps.

How much does an engagement photoshoot in Edinburgh cost?

You can find full details on my Pricing Guide page. I keep my session numbers intentionally small each year so I can give every couple my full attention – so if you have a date in mind, it’s worth getting in touch sooner rather than later.

Is rain a problem for engagement photos in Edinburgh?

Not at all – in fact, I love a rainy day shoot.

Overcast skies give a soft, flattering light and Edinburgh looks incredibly atmospheric in the mist. I’ll bring a clear umbrella for you, and some of my favourite photos have been taken on drizzly autumn afternoons. Embrace it – it’s Scotland after all!

Do I need to have my venue or wedding date booked before doing an engagement session?

Not at all. Lots of couples book an engagement session simply to have beautiful photos of their time in Edinburgh, whether they’re visiting from abroad or have been living here for years. It doesn’t need to be tied to wedding plans at all.

Can we do our engagement session in the Scottish Highlands instead?

For Highland locations, engagement shoots are available as Adventure Sessions rather than standard couple sessions – this is because I’m Edinburgh-based and the travel involved makes shorter sessions unsustainable.

Adventure Sessions start at 3 hours and cover stunning locations like Glencoe or the Isle of Skye. You can find full details and pricing on my pricing guide. Please note I have a very limited availability for engagement sessions and Adventure Sessions outside of Edinburgh so get in touch as early as possible to book your date.
