Is a nice, sunny and warm afternoon possible in November? In Scotland? Apparently so!

After I met this lovely couple and their dog at a car park we had a wonderful time during our photoshoot at Arthur’s Seat in Edinburgh. Weather-wise we couldn’t have asked for more. Sunsets are one of the best things that happen to a photographer. And Karo knows about it so well, as she is also an Edinburgh-based photographer. So great to meet people who share your interests, it always seems like you can talk to them all day and will never run out of subjects to discuss.

Karo, Sam and Mellie – the story

Sam and I met for the first time in Eastern Germany. Back then I didn´t really know what to do with my life and I wanted to change my habits. Wandering through the streets of Dresden I saw Sam playing street music and I immediately liked what I heard. I listened for a while. As I love singing, I thought it was good idea to ask him if he wanted me to sing in the background, maybe at some concerts. You have to know that back then I was pretty shy and I normally wouldn’t speak to strangers, but as I wanted to change my life, I thought: ‘Now or never!’ What I didn’t realise was, that that step out of my comfort zone would literally turn my life around 180 degrees.

Not long after I stopped my studies and followed Sam to Sweden. There we lived in a small wooden cottage in the forest. It was a hard time for me. A lot of things changed. I quit smoking and Sam started doing music full time. Going through a change is never easy but it is worth it. When we decided to get a dog, it was pure luck that someone in northern Germany couldn´t take Mellie, a Labrador – Golden Retriever mix puppy. After hours of searching on the internet we got a call that we could pick Mellie up in 2 days. We packed our bags and drove 10 hours down south in the middle of the Swedish winter. We had no dog experience and no dog gear. As in Germany on Sunday all the shops are closed, we went to the German version of Homebase to get a kind of dog lead and some dog food. The first months Mellie slept in a banana box and ate out of a plant pot. I think she liked it. It might not have been a properly thought through decision to get a dog. And I’m not gonna lie, it was bloody hard in the beginning. But we love our little big doggy.

Now, after all I find myself living in Scotland, my country of choice with a Bachelor of Arts degree, a dog and a partner who supports me in any possible way. Plus I found a new passion that fulfills me: photography.
